Walking Tour, Tapas and Lunch

The idea of this activity is to give you an overview of the main sights of Madrid and send you home with a real and lasting feeling of what the city and people are all about. The itinerary includes a walking tour around the city center and two stops for tapas before a sit-down lunch with typical Spanish food and drink, traditionally the largest meal of the day. At the end of the tour, we will either accompany you to the meeting point or transport or let you loose to explore the city on your own. (transport not included in tour price)

Itinerary

1130: Meet at the statue of Bazán in Plaza de la Villa

Walking Tour:

We will venture past some of the capital’s most important monuments, fountains and edifices. Among other things we will see the Catédral de la Almudena, the Royal Palace, the Teatro Real (Royal Opera House), Puerta del Sol (Madrid’s central hub), the Plaza Mayor (the main square) and the Spanish Parliament. As we walk through the streets, we will give you interesting snippets of information on the history, culture and mythology of Madrid and Spain.

c 1215 1st Tapas Stop

We will stop in a typical Asturian bar for a bit of cabrales (typical blue cheese), chorizo (Spanish spicy sausage), tortilla española (Spanish omelette), all washed down with cider (poured in a very original way from a distance of 1m!!), wine, and/or soft drinks.

c 1345 2nd Tapas Stop

We will enjoy some of the traditional Spanish ham, cheese, cecina (cured beef) salami, all accompanied by a beer, red wine of the summer or soft drink in a place dripping with hams where you will learn to what extent the pig is king in Spain!

c 1500 Lunch

In a very traditional restaurant in the center of Madrid, we will enjoy a sit-down dinner with raciones (platefuls) in the middle of the table for everyone to devour. Our Adventurous Appetities experts will advise you on the local specialities, help with translation, and tell you the history and traditions of the food. You will be able to try typical Spanish delicacies, such as Pimientos de Padrón - Baby green peppers (some are spicy and some not - the Spanish version of Russian roulette); Pulpo a la Gallega – Octopus sprinkled with paprika, Croquetas – ham-filled béchamel nuggets, and Morcilla - Spanish black pudding, all washed down with wine, beer or soft drinks. (See suggested sample menu below)
